These are transcriptions of recordings made in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the villages of Basihuare, Choguita, and Estacion Creel in the Municipality of Bocoyna, Chihuahua. They are transcriptions of Tarahumara ceremonial music, made in a 1983 colllaborative effort with my mother, musicologist and pianist Elizabeth Reames Spires [1922–1987]. Her patience—and her ability to unravel the complex time signatures in many of these tunes—made these sheets possible.
The three weeks we spent on this project during the winter in remote Shaniko, Oregon are a special memory for me; these pages are dedicated to her. I gratefully acknowledge the hospitality extended to me by Juán Manuel and Norberta Pérez.
